Day 7 – David Nam

1. What do you do for a living? (occupation/field of study).

Occupation: Tax Accounting

Study: Finance and Accounting with a minor in Public Policy

2. How do you like to spend your free time?

Reading books (Biographies of world leaders, church history)/current events (Politics, geo-politics, economics, tax, sociology, most opinion pieces), watching movies, traveling (At least twice within the US and one abroad), camping (I dream of camping in the winter).

3. Share one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know!

I love fast food more than all fine dining. Of these, I love Burger King the best.

4. Do you have a favorite book in the Bible? If you do, which one is it and why?

Hebrews. It is one of the most poetic books that cover the entirety of scripture. The book covers both the New and Old Testament all through the lens of Christ. The gospel mystery of the Old Testament is revealed and easily worked out in Hebrews.

5. Is there a verse/passage in the Bible that has significantly impacted your life? If so, which is it and why?

I always struggle with pride. In my rotations of reading the bible, I eventually come across this passage which pierces my heart:

“He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.””–Luke 18:9-14

6. Is there a prayer request that has been on your heart recently? If so, please share with us.

My prayer request is to ask God to always reveal the idols in my heart. Unfortunately, the blessings of life ushers in me greed and pride. I pray that God would remove the comforts of life and cause me to always wrestle for His name. There is greater joy in being in the presence of God than to be intoxicated by all the pleasures of the world.

7. Tell us about how you met Christ? (feel free to share a brief testimony).

I met Christ in my senior year of college. I had known of the bible and its basic tenets since I had attended the church in my youth; however, I was not firm in my faith with God. In my youth I can recall moments of passion in retreats leading to repentance and commitments, but it was in my senior year in college when there was a firm rooted change of heart.

I was a person who wanted to be loved and enjoy a good time. This led to a life of debauchery, all in the name of having a good time. But those moments were always fleeting which required a daily fix of adventure. Each outing simply left a gaping wondering: is this all life has to offer? It was in those moments I wanted something more though I did not identify it with God immediately. Eventually, I met the Lord and His love for me led to changes in the way I spoke and lived. God led me to reconcile, repent, and seek forgiveness. He led me to be charitable and notice the pride that creeps in my heart. Since then, He has always reminded me of His on-going grace and mercy.
